When is the Best Time to Clean Your Windows?

How often do you think that you should clean your windows? Windows are one of the first things that people see when they approach a house or building from the outside and they let all of the beautiful natural light in from the inside.

Many people either put this chore off.  Others simply do not know what the “right” or “best” time is to clean your windows. In this article, we will talk about why it is important to clean your windows, and when you should schedule that chore.

Why it is Important

Does it really matter if your windows are clean?

Absolutely!  Here are three main reasons:

Aesthetics

It is very hard to enjoy a great view through a dirty window.  Clean windows mean a clear view to your beautiful lawn, the city skyline or whatever nature you enjoy outside.

Window cleaning allows more natural light to come in.  Over time, windows become dull because of hard water minerals and other contaminants.

By keeping your windows clear and clean, your windows will not be dull and all of that beautiful sunlight will be able to pour in.  This is especially true of high-rise buildings.

Prevents Etching

Windows protect your home or business from the elements but that means that they have to face the elements!  Windows that are not maintained are prone to etching or scratching, which weaken the quality of the glass.

What causes etching? The large culprit in urban and suburban areas is hard water, which contains minerals like calcium that find their way into your window’s pores.

Property Value

Increase your home’s curb appeal and property value with sparkling clean windows.  In terms of return on investment, many realtors report that window cleaning will give you the best bang for your buck!

When to Clean Your Windows

The question often gets asked, when should I clean my windows? The answer is that it really depends on your location.

Of course many people point immediately to spring cleaning, as you are already in the frame of mind to get chores like that done.  As well, winter can cause a lot of grime and dirt to build up so cleaning in the spring will address that.

Some people hesitate to book window cleaning in the early spring on account of the rain.  If your windows are dirty, then rain will make a difference but it will not cause already clean windows to spot.

However, low rain in the summer makes it an equally good time to clean your windows.  Of course, if you are in a rural area, an extra fall cleaning is not a bad idea to deal with the dirt and dust that is kicked up during the harvest.

What about frequency?  At a bare minimum, you should clean your windows once per year.

However, that is a minimum.  For businesses, we recommend at least a monthly cleaning to maintain your professional image.

Of course, we always recommend a good window cleaning before a special event.  You will also want to clean your windows when you are listing your home and post-construction or post-renovation.
